A Critical Crossroads
Blues music and culture is approaching adefining moment in its history, influence and, from a commercial perspective, its very survival. In the face of mounting pressures, the prognosis dims with each passing year. Yet, against this graying backdrop exists a vibrant, often fanatical, multi-colored blues scene fueled by talented, passionate, little-known artists who play for the love of the music – because for most of them, it sure ain’t for the love of fame and fortune … or even family.
Many of the original icons with which Blues is closely associated have passed on, some quite recently. Today’s living legends are in their 70s, 80s, even 90s. And, with few exceptions, even the most talented “next generation” blues artists have not achieved the mainstream attention and widespread influence of their forbearers.
Bluesified: Exploring the State and Future of the Blues
Bluesified explores the state of the Blues music industry, as well as the lives of some its aspiring artists. We are still in production, but so far have the following footage in the can:
- In-depth interview with Honeyboy Edwards in his Southside Chicago apartment
- An inside look at Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials in rehearsal and recording sessions
- Exclusive footage of Honeynboy and Lil' Ed jamming on the radio
- A broad spectrum of exclusive live performance and interview footage from The Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge - featuring dozens of winning Blues bands from throughout the world converging on Memphis to compete for fame and prizes
- Heart-tugging speeches by the winners of The Blues Foundations's Keeping the Blues Alive awards
- Interviews with some of the most talented unheralded players on the Chicago Blues club scene
Please help support this important project by attending the Electric Cool Aid Rick 'n' Blues Bowl and/or by making a tax-deductible donation.
